Two Planks and a Passion Theatre announces creative team for its 20th season

Canning N.S. - Today Two Planks and a Passion’s Artistic Director Ken Schwartz announced the creative team for the fifth season of the award-winning Theatre off the Grid series held at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts each summer.

The world premiere of Rick Chafe’s new adaptation of Beowulf, commissioned and developed in collaboration with the company, will feature a cast of 13 of the region’s most accomplished performers including some new faces to grace the outdoor stages at Ross Creek.

“It’s entirely appropriate that our 20th anniversary season features both new faces and many veterans from previous seasons” Said Schwartz from his offices at the Ross Creek Centre. “It’s an incredible team of creators like this that serves to remind us how rich our region is in home-grown talent. I can’t wait to bring them together this summer.”

The cast for Beowulf includes Merritt Award- winner Jeremy Webb as Beowulf, as well as Theatre off the Grid vets Alexis Milligan, Chris O’Neill, Jeff Schwager, Andrea Lee Norwood and multiple Merritt-winner Burgandy Code. Performers new to the company include Daniel Lilliford, Benjamin Irvine, Jonny Thompson, Rhys Bevan- John and Jamie Konchak as Lyra.

Mark Adam, a percussionist and composer who performed in the company’s 2009 production of Allen Cole’s Rockbound, returns as a composer and performer for the production. Leesa Hamilton, nominated several times over the last two years for the Merritt Award for Costume design, returns to Ross Creek to design costumes for the production. Karen Jones designs large-scale puppets for the production, and Heather Lewis returns as Stage Manager.

Playwright Rick Chafe, a Winnipeg native, is best known to Nova Scotian audiences as the author of Two Planks’ award-winning production of The Odyssey in 2007. His Recent work includes Shakespeare’s Dog (N.A.C., A.T.P.) and Strike! The Musical .
Ken Schwartz, a five-time Merritt winner as director and producer, returns to direct Beowulf this summer.

“Rick’s take on Beowulf has an ancient feeling that is very true to the legend, but at the same time it contains the shock of the familiar. It isn’t the text you read in high school- it’s a vivid and engaging window into another world not unlike our own.” Said Schwartz. “Returning to the world of dragons, warriors and ancient myth is something we have been eager to do since our production of The Odyssey in 2007. It’s fitting that Rick is with us for the journey.”

Two Planks’ Theatre off the Grid series of performances have been nominated for 27 Merritt Awards since 2008, winning 14. The company’s production of Allen Cole’s Rockbound was recently a finalist for the 2010 L.G. Masterworks Award, and the series has been named one of the 101 things visitors must see on their visit to Nova Scotia (The Book of Musts by Allan Lynch).

Performed in daylight hours (a 6p.m. start time) outdoors on the 184-acre farm that surrounds the Ross Creek Centre, (www.artscentre.ca) Beowulf is the kind of marriage of nature and the imagination that Two Planks has been renowned for brining to the stage.

The show previews on July 8th and opens July 9th, 2011 at 6p.m. The show runs Tuesday through Sunday until August 6th. A single matinee will be presented at 1p.m. on August 6th.
