Two Planks Celebrates 20 years with a Passion

Award-winning Nova Scotian theatre company celebrates anniversary with world premiere, Gala fundraiser.

Two Planks and a Passion Theatre company is kicking off its 20th anniversary season with a gala fundraising event and the World premiere of Rick Chafe’s Beowulf.  The Canning, N.S. company, founded in 1992 by Chris O’Neill and current artistic director Ken Schwartz, is best known for its Theatre Off The Grid performance series at the Ross Creek Centre, which is currently in its fifth season.

Dedicated to both the creation of new Canadian theatre and re-interpretations of classic works, Two Planks has enjoyed a creative renaissance as it transformed from a national touring company to a producer of site-specific outdoor work at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, where the company is an anchor tenant.

Ken Schwartz, the current artistic directors says: “Our Theatre off the Grid series has been an incredible journey for us. Given the remote location of our venue, it can only be described as our “Field of Dreams” transformation- through creating something truly special- the audience came.”

Producing large-scale epic works like Allen Cole’s Rockbound, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Rick Chafe’s The Odyssey and Ami McKay’s Jerome: The Historical Spectacle has established the Ross Creek Centre as a premiere summer theatre destination in Nova Scotia. Two Planks has been nominated for 27 Merritt Awards for accomplishment in professional theatre in Nova Scotia since 2008, winning 14 including Outstanding Production for three consecutive years.

“It’s a very special marriage of nature and the imagination that is unique to our vision” says Schwartz. “Given the fact that we produce our work without any electricity in natural light, there is a very special and intimate atmosphere at our performances which enhances the experience.”

In 2011 Two Planks will present Rick Chafe’s Beowulf, a new adaptation of the epic work commissioned by the company. In development since 2008, Chafe’s new adaptation has been created specifically with an outdoor presentation in mind.

“Our outdoor venues offer so many possibilities. While producing outdoors does bring with it some restrictions, it also opens up huge possibilities in terms of depth, scale and the uncertainty that variable weather conditions on the Bay of Fundy presents” says Schwartz.

Beowulf, featuring a cast of 15, will open at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts on July 9th, 2011 and run until August 6th.

Two Planks will be holding a special 20th anniversary gala entitled “The Speakeasy” on April 16th, 2011 at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts. This 1920’s themed evening featuring a 3 course meal, music, and many other activities is an important fundraiser for the organization and the coming season. “What better way to celebrate our twentieth than to look back at the 20’s!” says Schwartz.
